Photoelectric sensors, also called photo eyes, are devices used to detect the presence or absence of an object. They use a light source, usually a LED (light-emitting diode), and a photosensitive element. The photosensitive element will detect when light hits it, which is then used by the sensor to determine the presence of an object. Photoelectric sensors are used in a variety of applications from sensing the position of objects in industrial production lines to detecting smoke in fire detection systems.
