An Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) is a device that measures and reports a body’s specific force, angular rate, and sometimes the orientation of the body, using a combination of accelerometers, gyroscopes, and magnetometers. An IMU is typically used in applications such as navigation, guidance and control, stabilization, and image stabilization. Additionally, IMUs are useful in robotics and industrial automation systems. By combining multiple versions of an IMU, a precise tracking of a body can be achieved. IMUs work by combining measurements of acceleration, angular rate, and magnetism to estimate the angular position, velocity, and acceleration of the body over a certain period of time. The data can then be used to control the body’s direction, velocity, and acceleration.
