Brushless dc (BLDC) motors are electrical motors that use electronic commutation systems rather than mechanical commutators. They are also called electronic commutated motors because they use electronic circuitry to monitor the motor's position and provide the appropriate electronic drive signals. They are similar to universal motors, which can operate on dc or ac power. Unlike a universal motor, however, a BLDC motor has permanent magnets that create a rotating magnetic field on the rotor, driving it to turn. In a typical BLDC motor, three phase currents are applied to three sets of permanent magnets mounted on the motor's rotor, creating a rotating magnetic field. The stator is usually wound with two sets of windings that interact with each other, creating a force that causes the rotor to turn. BLDC motors are highly efficient and has a wide range of applications in consumer and industrial products.
