16-bit microcontrollers, or MCUs, are a type of device that contains both a programmable processor core and memory. They are typically used for embedded system control, robotics, motor control, security and industrial automation applications. A 16-bit MCU typically runs at higher speeds than an 8-bit MCU and has increased memory, allowing for more complex instructions to be executed. It also has more GPIOs (General Purpose Input/Outputs) and often comes with analog- and digital- I/O features, along with a variety of communication options and other peripherals like timers, ADC/DAC, DAC, or encoders. Many 16-bit MCUs are low-power, making them suitable for battery-powered portable and remote sensor applications, as well as IoT and cloud applications.
