19-6061 Rev 0 10/11 MAX16928 Evaluation Kit Evaluates: MAX16928 General Description Features The MAX16928 evaluation kit (EV kit) is a fully assembled S 4.5V to 5.5V Input Range and tested surface-mount PCB that provides the voltages S Output Voltages and features required for automotive thin-film transistor 12V Output at 400mA (Boost Converter) (TFT), liquid-crystal display (LCD) applications. The EV 3.3V Output at 500mA (Regulator Controller) kit includes a boost converter, a 3.3V regulator controller 18V Output (Positive-Gate Voltage Regulator) with external npn transistor, two gate voltage regulators, a single-stage positive charge pump, and a single-stage -5.9V Output (Negative-Gate Voltage Regulator) negative charge pump. S High-Frequency Operation The EV kit can operate from 4.5V to 5.5V input voltages 2.2MHz (Boost Converter) and is optimized for automotive TFT-LCD applications. S Single-Stage Positive and Negative Charge Pumps The boost converter is configured for a 12V output that provides at least 400mA. The regulator controller output S Proven PCB Layout is 3.3V and provides at least 500mA. Recommended Equipment 9) Verify that the negative-gate voltage regulator (VGL) MAX16928 EV kit is approximately -5.9V. 4.5V to 5.5V, 2A DC power supply Detailed Description of Hardware Voltmeter Jumper Settings Procedure Several jumper settings in the following tables illustrate The EV kit is fully assembled and tested. Follow the steps features of the EV kit. below to verify board operation. Caution: Do not turn on the power supply until all connections are completed. Boost Circuitry and 3.3V Regulator 1) Verify that a shunt is installed on pins 1-2 on jumper Controller Enable Input (JU1) JU1. The devices ENP pin enables the boost circuitry and the 3.3V regulator controller. For normal operation, drive ENP 2) Verify that a shunt is installed on pins 2-3 on jumper high by installing a shunt on pins 1-2 on jumper JU1. For JU2. shutdown mode, drive ENP low by installing a shunt on 3) Connect the positive terminal of the power supply to pins 2-3 on JU1. See Table 1 for JU1 configuration. the INA PCB pad. Connect the negative terminal of the power supply to the PGNDP PCB pad closest to INA. Table 1. Jumper Functions (JU1) 4) Set the power-supply INA to 5V. SHUNT VSH AND 3.3V 5) Turn on the power supply. ENP PIN POSITION OUTPUTS 6) Verify that the step-up switching regulator (VSH) 1-2* Connected to INA Enabled is 12V. 2-3 Connected to GND Disabled 7) Verify that the 3.3V regulator is 3.3V. *Default position.
