EVALUATION KIT AVAILABLE MAX8586 Single 1.2A USB Switch in 3mm x 3mm TDFN General Description Features The MAX8586 single current-limited switch controls up to Reverse Current Protection 1.2A to power USB applications and has multiple protec- Programmable Current Limit Up to 1.2A tion features including thermal shutdown, internal current Accurate Current Limit limiting, and reverse current protection. The thermal shut- down limits junction temperature during a prolonged Selectable Auto-Restart when Fault Is Removed short or overload condition. The internal current-limiting Thermal-Overload Protection circuitry protects the input supply against overload and is programmable using an external resistor. The Selectable Active-High/Low ON Input MAX8586 meets all IEC specifications for USB ports. Built-In 20ms Fault Blanking The IC latches off when the output experiences a short Compliant with All USB Specifications circuit for more than 20ms, saving system power. Auto- 2.75V to 5.5V Input Supply Range restart tests the shorted output with a 25mA current to determine if the short still exists. Once the short is FAULT Indicator Output removed, the MAX8586 automatically restarts the out- 15kV ESD Protection (with Caps) put. An open-drain fault signal notifies the system that the internal current limit has been reached. A 20ms Tiny 8-Pin 3mm x 3mm TDFN Package fault-blanking feature allows the circuit to ignore momentary faults such as those caused when hot- Applications swapping into a capacitive load. An ENRESET input is USB Ports/Hubs available to disable the auto-restart function. The MAX8586 features a SEL input that programs ON Desktop/Notebook Computers to be either active high or active low. The IC is supplied PDAs and Palmtop Computers in a space-saving, 8-pin, 3mm x 3mm TDFN package.
