HGP2004 Coto

project The Human Genome Project (HGP) 2004 was an international research effort to sequence the entire human genome and build a powerful suite of tools to analyze and interpret the genetic data. It was a collaborative effort of biomedical research institutions, public and private funding organizations, commercial firms and individual scientists around the world. The project was initiated in 1990 by the US Department of Energy and the US National Institutes of Health and involved hundreds of scientists and dozens of laboratories worldwide. It was coordinated by the International Human Genome Sequencing Consortium (IHGSC) with only nominally funding from Germany, France, Japan and the UK. The Coto project was part of the HGP 2004 and focused on the efforts to develop a comprehensive set of computer-based tools for analyzing and interpreting the data from the sequencing of the human genome. The Coto project aimed to collect and organize a large-scale database of genetic information and make it freely available to researchers worldwide. The data was made available in the form of relational databases and in the form of an open source Java toolkit. The tools developed by the Coto project were instrumental in supporting the work of the International Human Genome Sequencing Consortium and ultimately enabled the successful completion of the Human Genome Project in April of 2003.
