The J1177-9 part of the Harbour is a section within the Victoria Harbour along the western side of Victoria, B.C. It is a wide open stretch of ocean, with good visibility and depths up to 30 meters. It is popular with recreational boaters, tourists, and scientists coming to study the north-west side of Vancouver Island's Southern resident Killer Whales. It includes public moorage facilities on the north side of the harbour and is frequently used for special event viewing. Popular activities around this section include whale watching, fishing, kayaking, windsurfing, and sightseeing. The area is often frequented by Harbour sea plane services and pilot courses.
