DSD-40BCD Series www.murata-ps.com Miniature 4 Digit, BCD Input, Slave LED Display FEATURES Low cost Complete No external components required PRODUCT OVERVIEW Rugged, epoxy-encapsulated package Murata Power Solutions DSD-40BCD digital slave display combines a full-size, 4 digit, LED display Ideal for computer-based instruments with all the other necessary components (including a built-in, contrast-enhancing lter/bezel) to imple- Miniature size: ment a pc-board mountable instrument display. The epoxy-encapsulated, 24-pin package, measuring 2.17 x 0.92 x 0.56 only 2.17 x 0.92 x 0.56 inches, is perfectly sized to occupy the absolute minimum pc-board space. The 55mm x 23mm x 14mm one-piece LED display eliminates the need to purchase multiple, matched-intensity LED susually an Built-in color lter and bezel expensive and limited-availability situation. The DSD-40BCD s exible design gives the user full control of all major display functions including Single +5V supply, TTL compatible display update rate, number of digits enabled, and decimal point selection. Its TTL-compatible inputs inter- Low-power model, 35mA (175mW) face directly with most BCD output, integrating analog-to-digital convertersno additional glue logic is Large (0.52 /13.2mm), matched-intensity, required When used with sophisticated microcomputers, the brightness of any digit can be independently LED display controlled by simply lowering the digit-drive input duty cycle. Choice of red or green LED s The extremely rugged package allows all models to operate over the temperature range of 0 to +70C (at 0 to 95% relative humidity). For power-sensitive designs, the low-power DSD-40BCD-RL model, with Minus sign and decimal points included all digits turned on, draws only 35mA from its +5V supply. This ultra-low power consumption means that PC-board or panel mountable even battery-powered applications can now bene t from the superior readability offered by LED displays. DSD-40BCD Operation (Please Refer to the Timing and Pinout Dia- 0.4 mA grams for the Following Discussion): The DSD-40BCD display has ve Low-Level Input Current (IIL) digits, labeled digit 1 (left-most digit or MSD) through digit 5 (right- +2.4 Volts High-Level Input Voltage (VIH) most digit or LSD), which are turned on by bringing their respective 0.05 mA High-Level Input Current (IIH) DIGIT DRIVE inputs to a high logic level. The binary coded decimal data Polarity Input (pin F): (BCD) on pins I- L is decoded into the corresponding seven-segment +0.8 Volts Low-Level Input Voltage (VIL) LED outputs necessary to display the numerals0 through9 . 0.4 mA Low-Level Input Current (IIL) Since there are effectively ve digits and only one set of BCD data in- puts, the DSD-40BCD s digits have their segments tied multiplexe) High-Level Input Voltage (VIH) +4.5 Volts together. The top segment, referred to as segment A, of digit 5 is 0.05 mA High-Level Input Current (IIH) connected to the A segment of the other three digits (digit 1 has no A Digit Drive Inputs (pins A-E): segment). The remaining B, C, D, E, F and G segments are connected +0.8 Volts Low-Level Input Voltage (VIL) to each other in the same fashion. Low-Level Input Current (IIL) 0.4 mA As an example of how the multiplexing scheme works, assume that +4.5 Volts High-Level Input Voltage (VIH) the BCD data inputs are 0001 (the BCD code for the decimal number 1) and also assume that the DIGIT DRIVE 3 input is high. Under these High-Level Input Current (IIH) 2 mA conditions, the B and C segments of digits 1-5 will all be enabled. DP1-DP4 Inputs (pins 4-6, 8): However, only the digits whose DIGIT DRIVE inputs are high, in this Low-Level Input Voltage (VIL) +0.8 Volts case only digit 3, will display the numeral1 . All the other digits will 20 mA Low-Level Input Current (IIL) be off. This example, while technically valid, will produce an extremely bright1 for digit 3. This will be explained in greater detail in the sec- High-Level Input Voltage (VIH) +4.5 Volts tion titledControlling the Display Brightness 0.05 mA High-Level Input Current (IIH) 2. DSD-40BCD Timing Diagram (See Figure 2): The timing diagram de- Power Supply Requirements picts the required typical input conditions and timing relationships that Supply Voltage +4.75 +5.00 +5.25 Volts allow the user to access all 5 digits. The recommended display scan Supply Current: rate is 100Hz. All 5 digits are scanned in 10ms, and each individual DSD-40BCD-GS +100 +130 mA digit iso for 2ms (20% duty cycle).
