An LCD graphic display module is a device with a LCD display and an integrated circuit (IC) that controls the display. It is an alternative to LED displays, which have a lower definition and are more costly to produce. The LCD graphic display module is capable of displaying text and images in multiple colors, depending on the type of IC and number of pixels used. LCD graphic display modules typically come in three main form factors: character, graphic, and touch.
Character LCD modules are used to display text and are usually lower-cost than other types of LCDs. The text is usually composed of eight lines of sixteen characters each. Graphic LCD modules, on the other hand, can display unlimited amounts of characters and images due to their higher amount of resolution. They require custom software for programming and have a higher cost than character LCD modules. Lastly, touch display modules are LCDs with sensing capabilities and are used for interactive applications.
Accessories, such as backlights, give the display extra visibility in darkened conditions. Other accessories use the display module interface, such as connectors and cables, to extend the connection of the display module to other digital devices. LCD controller boards can also be used to upgrade the capabilities of the LCD by connecting to a variety of external inputs and digital signal processors.
