Standard clock oscillators are devices that produce a periodic, oscillating signal. They are commonly used in digital electronics, to provide a timing reference or “clock” signal in order to regulate the operation of digital circuitry. Standard clock oscillators are typically implemented as a circuit, consisting of an amplifier, a resonator, and some other associated components. When a voltage is applied to the amplifier, the resonator creates an oscillating signal with a regular frequency, which is used as the reference clock signal. The frequency of the oscillation is determined by the physical characteristics of the resonator, and is usually adjustable in some manner, either electronically or by adjusting the capacitance or inductance of components in the oscillator circuit.
