12 MPLAB ICD HEADER (AC162051) Information Sheet Introduction The MPLAB ICD Header (Part Number AC162051) provides a means of connecting the MPLAB ICD 2 Module to a target board that does not incorporate a 6-wire modular connection into its design. The board is designed for 40-pin devices supported by MPLAB ICD 2. Please see the README.ID2 in the MPLAB IDE software for specific details on devices supported. The MPLAB ICD 2 Module connects to the MPLAB ICD Header via a 9-inch modular cable. For in-circuit debugging, insert a 40-pin PICmicro into the MPLAB ICD Header, then insert the header board into a 28-pin or 40-pin DIP socket on the target application. The 28-pin connector on the underside allows debugging of a 28-pin device using a 40-pin device as the master (U2). Pin connections translate a 40-pin device to the 28-pin device. DS51291A-page 1 MPLAB ICD Header Information Sheet Installation Install the MPLAB ICD Header by following these steps: 1. Plug the 40-pin device into the 40-pin DIP socket (U2 location) in the MPLAB ICD Header board. Note 1: All signals EXCEPT RB6 and RB7 are brought down to the target board. RB6 and RB7 are reserved for use on MPLAB ICD 2 and only connect to the MPLAB ICD 2 connector. 2: J1 is not populated but is shorted on the bottom side of the board, this allows the MPLAB ICD 2 to sense the target voltage and provide the proper signals to the target board. 2. Connect the 9-inch modular cable between the MPLAB ICD 2 Module and the MPLAB ICD Header. 3. If you are debugging a 40-pin part using a target board, insert the two 20-pin male to male headers (stand-offs) onto the target board sockets. Then, plug the MPLAB ICD Header board into the stand-offs. If you are debugging a 28-pin part using a target board, insert the two 14- pin male to male headers (stand-offs) onto the target board sockets.
