Instrumentation amplifiers (In-amps) are special types of operational amplifiers (op-amp) with additional operating specifications and a higher level of stability, accuracy, and low noise. They are used in measuring instrumentation, data acquisition systems and control systems where high accuracy and high common-mode rejection ratio (CMRR) are required. Instrumentation amplifiers usually operate from power supplies and usually require a three-terminal connection. Instrumentation amplifiers amplify low-level signals, usually in the sub-microvolt to millivolt level range and are more immune to overload conditions than a standard op-amp. They are insensitive to common-mode voltages, temperature drifts, and interference/noise. They also have low offset voltages and bias currents, allowing them to be used in precision measurements.
